Top 10 Wedding Hair tips

So wedding season is upon us and at Perfectly Posh Hair design we are booked up all summer with wedding hair.

Now I love this time of year because the brides are all excited, I’m all excited because I absolutely love putting hair up. But the one thing I have found with all my brides is they never know what order to do any preparation by.

So I have put together a top 10 Wedding Hair tips to help them get sorted and where to start first, as not every bride reading this will be going to a hairdressers to get their hair done. Some of you have very tight budgets and will get friends or family doing it…. but you can always adapt my top tips around that.

So here we go…..

  1. First thing to do is PLAN PLAN PLAN….. your find most salons that cater for wedding hair get very booked up in advance so your need to book your wedding hair as soon as you can and work back from there. I would always recommend you have your hair coloured about a week before the big day, because if you decide any earlier then this, your roots will start to appear and could show in any hair up style you go for. Your cut should be around 2 weeks before, Just so it doesn’t have that ‘Just cut ‘ look. Your need your hair looking healthy and so even if it’s the smallest of trims it helps.
  2. I will advise all you brides for your hair up/ wedding hair look is to make sure you choose a style that looks like you! Don’t forget he is marrying you and something that is far to funky, outrageous or even a little too different is something you might where to Ascot racing, or a party on a saturday night but not to your wedding. It has to be timeless and so you can look back on those photos of your big day and not cringe!!! So if you have soft and gentle hair, go with that and try to avoid sleek up dos. If your hair is curly, use that and enhance your curls with your look.
  3. It’s all about CONDITION!!!….. You need to make sure you hair is healthy and in excellent condition. No point in having damaged hair on your wedding day. Your pictures will pick this up, you want smooth, soft and shiny hair on your wedding day. So get your stylist to work out a treatment plan and get one brought and use it at home.
  4. So do you have an idea of what style you want??? yes or no, start collecting pictures from different magazines or even look on the internet. Talk to your stylist about the ideas you have as there the best person to help and advise you on what will compliment you not only on your face but also to what style of dress and wedding your having.
  5. Trial run: This is a very important part of your wedding preparation and make sure you find time in your planner for this. A hairdresser that can perform wedding hair on the day with out a trial must wave a magic wand and become a fairy godmother on the day because believe me i know i couldn’t do it. You MUST have a practice run for your wedding hair and when your with your stylist bring everything you need, ideas, accessories ie…. Tiara, veil, clips or slides with you so you can get the full effect.Once your trial is done remember to take a picture of your final look so that if no one is with you, you can go back home and ask someone close for their opinion.
  6. So your style of wedding hair is something to really think about….. you need to make sure you don’t go too over the top and look like lady gaga with your wedding hair. Also really think about the style you want for you then to follow it in with your bridesmaids. There is no point going for something sleek and bo chic whilst your bridesmaid look like they have stopped of the saturday night train from a good night out! Your look silly and so will they. You need to blend them in with you and at least bring a little of the brides look in to the wedding party.
  7. I know most of you will be thinking ‘ I need to grow my hair’ well try to not think of your current style as a starting block because you can add hair for your wedding hair style. Extensions are brilliant for this. Weather you go for the full monty and have a full head of pre-bonded extensions or your stylist can get the clip in ones and add them to your style. You’d be very surprised what an expert wedding hair stylist can do. Extensions can add volume and length, and completely change your whole look. Also try to think about your dress as this is very important on the style of hair design you go for, for your hair up do. You style of dress must match you hair style.
  8. If you can bring your bridesmaids to the trial run as their going to be so important for you on the big day. So get your bridesmaid trained to be by your side as they will need to know how to take out a veil if and when you want it out, without wreaking your hair.
  9. What ever you do try to not wash your hair the day of the wedding. Wash it the night before. Your hair is better to style up after around 24 hours as the hair needs to have a little dirt in to help stay up. If the hair is too freshly washed, the hair is soft and silky and can slide out to quick. I know for some of you this is not possible because your hair gets to greasy over night. I know this as mine gets like it…. well wash it in the morning of the wedding and your stylist can weigh it down with product to help the silky effect of that ‘just washed’ feel.
  10. Now the last and MOST important part to all of this…… RELAX and ENJOY your big day!!!………You have done everything you can and there is nothing more you can do….. you will look gorgeous by now and your new husband to be….. well he is going to go week at the knees when he sees you!
Hope this has helped any of you brides to be out there and also check out my website for more details and pictures.
